SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Senior Philipp Sikatzki and sophomore Molly McNamara both won events as the Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming teams competed in the 13th annual Copa Coqui meet in northeastern Puerto Rico Wednesday.

The Copa Coqui consists of long course meter events as opposed to the traditional short course yards primarily used in collegiate swimming.

Four individual events and one relay were contested by each gender. The CSU men and women both scored 19 points, as the men took third while the women tied for second.

McNamara won the 100 butterfly, topping the field of 50 in 1:05.90. She also was one of a slew of Viking women to place highly in the 100 freestyle as she took 10th in 1:03.65.

Four Viking women were in the top 10 in the 100 free, and seven Vikings were among the top 15 in an event that featured 71 entrants. The group was led by freshman Gabriella Marinelli's second-place finish (1:01.99) while freshman Meghan Bobick and sophomore Ashleigh Bennett were sixth (1:03.09) and seventh (1:03.31), respectively.

The CSU women placed second in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:53.08. Senior Jamie VanDewerker led off the relay and was followed by Marinelli, Bobick and senior Anna Evans.

Junior Tobie Zeller was fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.62 while sophomore Cassandra Oltman was CSU's top finisher in the 100 backstroke, as she placed ninth in 1:11.00. Sophomore Michaela Bargardi quickly followed behind Oltman in 1:12.50, which put her in a tie for 11th.

On the men's side, Sikatzki won the 100 butterfly in 58.45 seconds to lead the field of 35. He also was CSU's top finisher in the 100 freestyle, taking third in 53.76 seconds.

Sophomore Tommi Wolst was not far behind Sikatzki in the freestyle, as Wolst was fifth in 55.23 seconds. Wolst was the Vikings' best performer in the 100 backstroke, where he took second in 1:00.74. Junior Jonathan LaValle was eighth in the backstroke in 1:04.25.

Freshmen DJ Arslanian and Tyler Stevenson both contributed top-five finishes Wednesday. Arslanian was fifth in the 100 fly in 59.94 seconds while Stevenson was CSU's top finisher in the 100 breaststroke, taking fifth in 1:11.62.

CSU's top team took fourth in the men's 200 free relay in 1:40.42. Sikatzki led off and was followed by senior Declan McLaughlin, senior Robert Tolson and Wolst.

After returning from its winter training trip to Puerto Rico, Cleveland State will commence a string of dual meets against Horizon League foes, beginning Saturday, Jan. 14, at UIC.
