Vikings Sweep Bonnies in First Dual Meet Action

St. Bonaventure, N.Y. – The Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming and diving teams both won their opening dual meet of the season Friday evening as they each defeated St. Bonaventure at the Reilly Center Pool.

The women's team took down the Bonnies, 137-106, while the men's team was victorious by a score of 145-96.

The CSU women won nine of 11 swimming events contested along with one of the diving events. The CSU men won eight of the 11 swimming events that took place.

Both junior Jamie VanDewerker and sophomore Claudia Zido finished in first place in three events Friday, two of which were individual swims.

VanDewerker won the 50 freestyle (24.36) and 100 freestyle (53.71) while also leading off the 200 freestyle relay that finished in first. Zido was at the other end of the freestyle spectrum as she won the 500 free (5:14.21) and the 1000 free (10:43.21), the latter which was the fastest time in the Horizon League on the young season. Zido also swam the anchor leg of the 200 free relay.

Freshman Gabriella Marinelli won the 200 freestyle (1:55.41) to help CSU sweep every event in that discipline. She also swam on the winning 200 free and 400 medley relays, swimming the anchor leg in the latter relay.

Sophomore Molly McNamara won the 100 butterfly (56.97), was second in the 200 IM (2:10.20) and swam the third leg of the winning 400 medley relay (3:53.88). Junior Tobie Zeller won the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.04 and swam the second leg on the winning medley relay team.

Senior Tori Taffner won the 3-meter diving event with 269.63 points, and she was second in the 1-meter event with 208.28 points.

Sophomore Tommi Wolst helped CSU to a trio of first-place finishes on the men's side. He won the 100 backstroke (50.09) and the 200 IM (1:52.41) and swam the second leg of CSU's winning 400 medley relay team (3:22.60). Wolst's time in the 200 IM marked the top time in the Horizon League on the young season.

Senior Philipp Sikatzki won the only individual event he was entered in, claiming the 100 butterfly in 48.06 seconds. He also led off the winning 400 medley relay and the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:25.23).

Freshman DJ Arslanian won the 200 freestyle in 1:44.96 and took second place in the 100 free in 47.68. He also swim the third leg on the winning 400 medley relay team.

Sophomore Jared Stergar won the 100 breaststroke (58.82) and placed third in the 200 IM (1:58.48). Senior Patrick Walsh was victorious in the 1000 freestyle in 10:05.52.

Freshman Tyler Stevenson swam the anchor leg on the winning 400 medley relay team and took second to Arslanian in the 200 free (1:46.09). Sophomore MacJilton Lewis was the runner-up in both distance freestyle events, finishing the 500 in 4:51.51 and the 1000 in 10:11.83.

Cleveland State will be back in action next Saturday, Oct. 29, as both teams have their home opener against Xavier at 1:00 p.m.
