Green Tops White in Annual Splash Bash Event

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming and diving teams unofficially kicked off the 2016-17 season Saturday inside the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium by hosting their seventh annual Splash Bash meet.

The event features alumni of the program and U.S. Masters swimmers in addition to the CSU men's and women's teams.

Most traditional individual events were held while both relays, the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay, and the diving were contested as mixed gender events.

CSU's Green team topped the White team, 237.5 – 202.5.

Four Viking men each won a pair of events Saturday.

Senior Declan McLaughlin claimed both the 50 freestyle (21.30) and the 100 freestyle (47.51).

Senior Philipp Sikatzki, a 2016 NCAA First Team All-American, cruised to first-place finishes in the 100 backstroke (48.94) and the 100 butterfly (48.50).

Freshman Tyler Stevenson won both breaststroke events, taking the 100 in 59.97 seconds and the 200 in 2:14.59.

Sophomore Tommi Wolst topped the field in both the 200 backstroke (1:51.47) and the 200 IM (1:53.51).

A quartet of women each won two events for CSU.

Sophomore Molly McNamara, the reigning Horizon League Freshman of the Year, took the butterfly events as she won the 100 in 57.85 seconds and the 200 in 2:06.62.

Freshman Chuchu Yang won both backstroke events as she took the 100 in 59.97 seconds and the 200 in 2:09.36.

Junior Tobie Zeller finished first in both breaststroke events, touching the wall in the 100 in 1:09.30 and in the 200 in 2:35.66.

Sophomore Claudia Zido won both the 200 freestyle (2:01.04) and the 500 freestyle (5:27.11).

CSU will open the regular season next weekend as it competes in the Colgate Falls Classic Oct. 7-8.
