CSU Shortstop Named Horizon League Softball Player Of The Week

April 9, 2002

Cleveland State shortstop Michelle Beightol(Akron, Ohio/Springfield) hit .643 over four games last week to earn Horizon League Player of the Week honors on Monday.

A sophomore, Beightol became the second Viking in as many weeks to garner the honor. Last week, junior catcher Stephanie Taylor (Wintersville, Ohio/Indian Creek) was recognized.

Beightol hit her second home run of the year in CSU's 4-3 win over Toledo on April 3 as part of a 3-for-3 game which also included a triple. In the second game against the Rockets, Beightol got the Viking rally started in the bottom of the fifth with a one-out double that helped CSU erase a five-run deficit. Unfortunately for Beightol and the Vikings, the game was called due to weather conditions after five innings with the score tied six-all.

Of Beightol's nine hits on the week, seven were for extra bases, including four triples, giving her an impressive 1.571 slugging percentage.

Overall, Beightol leads the Vikings (10-12-1) offense, hitting .435 with eight doubles, five triples, two home runs and 18 RBI.
