Late rally falls just short as Softball ends Florida trip with heartbreaker to UB

MIAMI – Sticking true to its form this season, the Cleveland State softball team went on another late-inning rally, but in the end the Vikings fell on the wrong side of a 5-4 decision to Buffalo to conclude its time at the FIU Panther Invitational on Sunday.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Cleveland State – 4, Buffalo – 5 (seven innings)
LOCATION: FIU Softball Stadium – Miami, Florida
RECORDS: Cleveland State 4-5 (0-0 Horizon), Buffalo 3-2 (0-0 MAC)

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- Brooke Albaugh was the only Viking to finish with an RBI, with the majority of CSU's runs unearned in the contest.

- Melissa Holzopfel, Becky Hurosky, Courtney Fernette, Sydney Bajusz and Jenna Deang all recorded a hit for the Vikes.

- Jenna Watts was great in relief as she finished the final five frames with two runs allowed (just one earned) to go with two strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Buffalo jumped out to a fast start as the Bulls got two runs in the opening frame and another three in the bottom of the second to take a commanding 5-0 lead. It would, however, be the only runs that UB scored the rest of the contest.

- Cleveland State stormed back in the top of the sixth as the Vikings combined for three hits and four runs to cut the lead to 5-4.

- The Vikes were able to get a baserunner on in the top of the seventh, but UB was able to slam the door to escape with the non-conference victory.
