MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The Cleveland State Vikings softball team dropped a midweek doubleheader against Robert Morris, falling by scores of 10-2 and 14-6 on Tuesday at North Athletic Complex.
Game One Recap - Colonials 10, Vikings 2 (5 innings)
A Torrie Jenkins home run put the Vikings on top 2-0 in the top of the second inning, but Robert Morris responded with eight runs in the bottom of the frame to setup a 10-2 win in the opening contest.
Jenkins, who also received the starting nod in the circle, followed a leadoff walk by Taylor Duncan with a two-run blast to right center, her fourth homer of the season.
Jenkins was charged with six runs over her 1.2 innings, but none were earned following a pair of Vikings errors. The same goes for Jenna Watts, who tossed three innings in relief and allowed four unearned runs on three hits while striking out a pair.
The Colonials ended the game after five innings with back-to-back two-out RBI hits in the bottom of the fifth.
For the Vikings, Courtney Fernette went 1-2 at the plate thanks to a leadoff single in the fifth.
Game Two Recap - Colonials 14, Vikings 6 (5 innings)
After Cleveland State grabbed a 6-3 lead in the top of the third frame, the Colonials used another big inning, this time a nine-run fourth, to notch a 14-6 decision once again based on the run rule.
The Vikings' offense rebounded nicely in the nightcap, with eight of nine batters in Cleveland State's order recording a hit. After Robert Morris pulled ahead 2-0 in the opening inning, the Vikes responded with back-to-back RBI knocks from Mackenzie Tucker and Kaelin Ettinger in the second frame to take a 3-2 lead.
The Colonials found the tying run in the bottom of the inning on a passed ball, but Aly Packish hammered a solo shot to deep left field before Becky Hurosky logged a two-run double to right center for a 6-3 Cleveland State lead.
Robert Morris drew back within a run at 6-5 in the third before exploding for nine runs in the fourth. The Vikings were unable to answer in the fifth, giving the Colonials the two-game sweep.
Sydney Bajusz swiped a pair of stolen bases while Taylor Betz took a no decision in her seventh start after surrendering five runs (four earned) on five hits across three innings of work.
UP NEXT
The Vikings will wrap up a six-game road trip with a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday against Northern Kentucky. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
