Vikings Drop Two Games in Clinton, S.C.

CLINTON, South Carolina – The Cleveland State Vikings softball team fell in both of their matches on Sunday, March 1. Cleveland State first fell victim to Wagner (9-4) in game one of its double-header, before falling to Presbyterian (1-0).

Game One Recap:

Wagner jumped out to an early lead in the Vikings first game of the day, tacking on four runs in the top of the first inning. Cleveland State earned a run back in the bottom of the second inning, as Kaelin Ettinger slapped a single to center field, scoring Mackenzie Tucker.

Wagner responded by scoring three more runs in the top of the third, building a 7-1 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning.

The Vikings scored a run in four straight innings in today's ballgame.

Kelly Hysong led off the bottom of the third inning with a single to right field. Aly Packish was next to the plate for the Vikes, singling to the pitcher. A bad throw would result in Hysong scoring for Cleveland State.

Lindsay Ward began the bottom of the fourth inning with a single through the left side. The sophomore from Kirtland, Ohio, stole second base, sneaking into scoring position. With Ward on second, Kaelin Ettinger notched another RBI single, this time to left field.

Cleveland State recorded its final run of the ballgame in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Ward smacked an RBI double to left center, scoring Paige Hartley.

Wagner recorded a run in both the sixth and seventh innings, resulting in a 9-4 loss for the Vikings.

Taylor Betz started the game in the circle for Cleveland State, falling to 0-2 on the season

Game Two Recap:

In game two of Cleveland State's double-header, the Vikings fell to Presbyterian, 1-0, in a pitching duel.

Kelly Hysong (3-2) pitched 6.0 innings, recording six strikeouts, four hits, one run and no walks.

The Vikings will be back on the field on Friday, March 6 in Longwood, Florida. Over the course of March 6 – March 14, Cleveland State will play in 14 games.
