RECAP

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Aly Packish had three hits and reached base six times, but Cleveland State dropped both ends of a Horizon League doubleheader to Youngstown State on Saturday at the Youngstown State Softball Complex. The Penguins won the opener 2-1 and then posted a 4-2 victory in game two.

Packish was 2-for-2 with a walk in game one and went 1-for-1 with two walks and two runs scored in the second game.

Kelly Hysong continued her strong recent performance on the mound as she went 6.0 innings and struck out a season-high 10 batters in game one. She allowed just five hits and one earned run and has a 1.73 earned run average in her last five appearances in the circle.

Youngstown State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning of game one on the strength of a walk and a double, but the Vikings would respond.

With one out in the Vikings fourth inning, Hallie Ward singled to right and Jordan Humitz followed with a single to right which pushed Ward to third base. Valeri Broschk brought in Hallie Ward from third base as she dropped down a bunt to tie the game at 1-1.

Youngstown State took advantage of a Vikings fielding error to score what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Elle Buffenbarger and Addy Jarvis combined to keep Cleveland State off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest to secure the win.

Hanna Griffin was equally as effective in the circle in game two for the Vikings as she allowed just one earned run over 6.0 innings, but was hurt by a pair of Cleveland State errors.

Youngstown State, which improved to 20-20 overall and 8-2 in the Horizon League, jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning of the second game.

Cleveland State, which fell to 10-26 on the season and 3-9 in league play, scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Packish walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second base when Sydney Bajusz reached on a Penguins error. Packish advanced to third on a fly ball to right by Hysong and came in to score when Ries singled off the pitcher to cut the lead to 3-1.

The Penguins tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a home run, but the Vikings would mount a rally in the top of the sixth inning.

Packish and Lindsay Ward drew walks to lead off the inning and the Vikings pushed across their second run of the game when Packish scored when Hysong was safe on a Youngstown State error.

The Vikings return to action on Wednesday (April 17) when it visits Toledo for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
