GAME RECAP

CLEVELAND -- Lindsay Ward belted her first career home run and Aly Packish added a pair of RBIs as Cleveland State completed a three-game sweep of Green Bay with a 5-4 win over the Phoenix on Sunday at Viking Field.

With the win, Cleveland State swept the Phoenix in the weekend series which marked the first time the Vikings have swept a three-game Horizon League series at home since sweeping Detroit Mercy on April 17-18, 2013.

With the win, the Vikings improved to 10-20 overall and 3-3 in the Horizon League while Green Bay dropped to 6-17 overall and 1-5 in league play.

Cleveland State also got a home run from Kelly Hysong and Paige Hartley finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Hysong led off the first inning for Cleveland State with her team-leading seventh home run of the season to right centerfield giving the Vikings an early 1-0 lead.

Cleveland State then used a four-run inning to take a 5-0 lead.

With one out, Hartley doubled to right center and advanced to third when Hysong followed with a single up the middle. Hartley and Hysong, who advanced to second on the throw into the infield, scored when Packish lined a single to right to push the Vikings lead to 3-0.

Ward then increased the lead to 5-0 when she blasted her first career home run to straight away centerfield to bring home Packish. Ward had an 11-pitch at bat against Kayla Schwebke, which included six foul balls, before launching the home run.

Griffin sailed through the first six innings, but ran into trouble in the seventh inning when the Phoenix tallied four runs to trim the lead to 5-4. With the tying run at second base and the go-ahead run at first base, Hysong came on to strike out Kalyssa Koehn to preserve the win and earn her first save of the season.

Cleveland State returns to action on Tuesday (April 9) when it host Detroit Mercy in a Horizon League game at 4 p.m. The teams will play a doubleheader on Wednesday (April 10) beginning at 1 p.m.
