Major's Complete Game Helps Vikings Split With Oakland

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Alicia Major threw a complete game, four-hitter to lead Cleveland State to a 4-2 victory over Oakland in the series finale on Thursday afternoon at Viking Field. Oakland won the first game of today's doubleheader, 10-2.

Major, who threw her first complete game of the season and the second of her career, allowed just two runs - one earned - on four hits and struck out one. She retired the side in order four times this afternoon, earning her first win of the year.

The Vikings manufactured two runs in the first inning to give Major an early lead in the circle. Paige Hartley led off with a single and moved to second on Mel Woodard's sacrifice bunt. Hartley advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error. Hanna Breeden added an RBI single to push the lead to 2-0.

After Oakland sliced the deficit to 2-1 with a run in the fourth, the Vikings came right back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run single from Olivia Jones.

Oakland added a run in the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate, but Major ended the game by getting a foul pop to the first baseman.

Breeden finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI in game two, while Jones drove in two.

In the opener, Hartley, Mackenzie Joecken, Breeden and Kait Gairing all had hits, while Hartley and Gairing also scored runs.

Kristin Catalano entered the game in relief in the third inning, marking her 67th career relief appearance. It tied her for the most relief appearances in school history with Grace Luginbuhl (2003-06).

The Vikings are back in action on Friday when CSU hosts Northern Kentucky at 3:00 pm to open a three-game series.
