Ries' Grand Slam Helps Vikings Win at IUPUI, 7-4

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Riley Ries hit a grand slam - CSU's second in as many games - and Kristin Catalano worked four innings of one hit relief to help Cleveland State win at IUPUI, 7-4, on Saturday afternoon in the series finale.

The Vikings improved to 12-21 overall and 2-4 in the Horizon League, while the Jaguars fell to 12-24 overall (8-9 HL).

The Jaguars got on the board with two runs in the first inning, but Ries' grand slam in the third inning gave CSU a 4-2 lead. It was the second time in as many games the Vikings hit a grand slam with Mackenzie Joecken hitting one in the seventh inning of yesterday's second game.

IUPUI came right back with two runs in the bottom of the third to knot the game at 4-4, but CSU erupted for three runs in the sixth to regain the lead. Joecken had a two-run double and Marissa Marcelli added a run scoring double.

Joecken finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Jordan Humitz also had two hits and Kait Gairing scored two runs.

Catalano earned the win in relief, working the last four innings and giving up just one hit. She came in with a runner on first base in the fourth inning and induced the next batter into a double play, starting a streak of 10 straight batters retired. The first Jaguar to reach against Catalano came on a two out single in the seventh inning.

CSU returns to action for three games at Detroit Mercy on Tuesday and Wednesday. The series opens with a doubleheader on Tuesday at 12:00 pm with a single game at 12:00 pm on Wednesday.
