Vikings Travel to IUPUI for Three Game Series

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State softball team returns to action for a three-game Horizon League series at IUPUI this weekend. The series has been altered due to the weather forecast with the teams now slated to open the series with a doubleheader on Friday (April 13) at 1:00 pm with the final game of the series on Saturday (April 14) at 1:00 pm.

The series begins a stretch of 15 games over 16 days for the Vikings and 20 games over the final 24 days of the season.

The Vikings are 11-19 overall and 1-2 in the Horizon League after last weekend's home series against UIC was postponed due to poor weather conditions. IUPUI is 10-24 overall this year and 6-8 in the League. The Jaguars, who are in their first year in the Horizon League, were swept in the three-game series by UIC on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Senior Mackenzie Joecken leads the Viking offense, ranking third in the Horizon League in batting (.408) and on-base percentage (.473), fourth in slugging percentage (.673) and seventh in home runs (3), while adding six runs, two doubles and 13 RBI. She has hit safely in 10 of the last 12 games, including multiple hits in five of the games.

Senior Mel Woodard ranks ninth in the League with a .354 average, adding 13 runs and five RBI, while junior Riley Ries is hitting .324 and ranks fourth in the League with 20 runs batted in and seventh with three homers.

Macy Kaisk leads the CSU pitching staff with a 3-5 record and a 2.98 ERA, ranking sixth in the League. She had worked 42.1 innings with two complete games and 19 strikeouts. In addition, Kaisk is hitting .276 at the plate with four doubles, two homers and eight RBI. Joecken is tops on the team with five wins and leads the squad in appearances (16), games started (10), innings (53.2) and strikeouts (38), while senior Kristin Catalano has been stellar in relief, posting a 2-0 record with a 3.44 ERA in 14 relief appearances.

CSU is back in action for six Horizon League games next week, starting with a three-game series at Detroit Mercy on Tuesday and Wednesday (April 17-18) before hosting Youngstown State for three games on Friday and Saturday (April 20-21).
