Late Rally Falls Short for Softball in 5-4 Setback at Hawaii

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Cleveland State's late rally against Hawaii came up just short as the Vikings fell to the host Rainbows, 5-4, in CSU's final game of the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic on Saturday night.

It was the 10th one run game of the season for the Vikings and the fifth straight overall.

The Vikings are now 9-16 this year.

Hawaii got on the board in the first inning on a two-run homer, but Emery Sipe's RBI single scored Mackenzie Joecken in the second inning to slice the lead in half. The Rainbows added a run in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead.

However, Joecken had an RBI double in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-2 and Mel Woodard added a two-run single in the sixth to pull the Vikings within one at 5-4.

In the seventh, Hanna Breeden led off with a walk and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Olivia Jones, but a fly out and strikeout ended the rally.

Woodard and Joecken both went 2-for-3, while Paige Hartley, Breeden, Sipe and Kait Gairing each had one hit.

Hartley also scored two runs.

The Vikings are now out of action until CSU hosts Niagara on March 28 for a doubleheader. The first game is slated for 2:00 pm.
