Vikings Host CSU Dome Tournament to Open 2018 Season

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State softball team opens the 2018 season when the Vikings host the CSU Dome Tournament from Friday through Sunday (Feb. 9-11) at the Krenzler Dome. The Vikings will be joined in the event by Bowling Green, Canisius, Niagara and Robert Morris.

The complete schedule for the tournament is as follows:

Friday, Feb. 9
Niagara at Cleveland State, 2:00 p.m.
Bowling Green vs. Niagara, 4:30 p.m.
Bowling Green at Cleveland State, 7:00 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 10
Niagara vs. Robert Morris, 10:00 a.m.
Robert Morris at Cleveland State, 12:30 p.m.
Bowling Green vs. Niagara, 3:00 p.m.
Bowling Green vs. Canisius, 5:30 p.m.
Canisius at Cleveland State, 8:00 p.m.

Sunday, Feb. 11
Canisius vs. Robert Morris, 11:00 a.m.
Bowling Green vs. Robert Morris, 1:30 p.m.
Canisius at Cleveland State, 4:00 p.m.

The CSU Dome Tournament is the first of five tournaments to open the season for the Vikings with the next four taking place on the road. CSU will also play at the NC A&T Tournament, the Belmont Tournament, the Bulldog Classic in Fresno, Calif., and the Hawaii Tournament.

At last year's dome tournament, the Vikings went 1-3 with its lone win a 5-4 victory over Canisius in eight innings.

Head coach Becky Norris returns for her fifth season at the helm and welcomes back 12 letterwinners from last year's squad. The Vikings also have nine newcomers with seven freshmen and a pair of transfers.

Sophomore Hanna Breeden is the top returning hitter after she hit .309 with seven runs, seven doubles and 15 RBI during her freshman campaign. Mackenzie Joecken is one of five seniors on this year's squad. and is back after hitting.296 with seven doubles, seven home runs and 26 runs batted in last year. Joecken also won four games in the circle as she worked a team-high 104.2 innings. Senior Aubrie Tone batted .233 with a pair of home runs and nine runs batted in, while junior Riley Ries hit. 230 last season and drove in 18 runs.

Following this weekend's games, the Vikings travel to the NC A&T Tournament for four games next weekend.
