Vikings Sign Five to National Letters of Intent

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State head softball coach Becky Norris has announced the signing of five student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to attend Cleveland State and play softball beginning in the fall of 2018. Joining the Vikings will be Valeri Broschk (Grafton, Ohio), Taylor Duncan (Danville, Ohio), Hanna Griffin (Medina, Ohio), Gabby Shackelford (Grafton, Ohio) and Mackenzie Tucker (Park Ridge, Ill.).

"We are extremely excited about next year's class and the versatility that each player will bring," Norris said. "This is a very talented class that we will welcome to the Viking softball family and not only are they all tremendous softball players, but they are well-rounded individuals. This youthful class will provide energy and depth to our experience roster.

Broschk has hit .286 with 37 runs and 18 RBI during her career at Keystone HS. She is the younger sister of former CSU all-league performer, Alyson Broschk (2010-14).

"Valeri has always been an excellent defender for as long as I have known her and she has become a better hitter year after year," Norris said. "We are excited to have her talent for both infield and outfield duties."

Duncan has been a standout at Danville HS, earning first team all-conference and second team all-region accolades.

"Taylor comes from a great travel organization, the Stingrays," Norris said. "She has a great bat at the plate and we are excited for the versatility she will add to the team and the softball IQ she will bring to the field."

Griffin hit .409 with five home runs and 18 RBI for Highland HS last year, which earned her a first-team all-league nod. As the Hornets' No. 2 in the circle, she had 24 strikeouts in 30 innings.

"We expect Hanna to come in and be an instant impact in the circle," Norris said. "The movement she provides will be a great addition to our experienced pitching staff. We also look for Hanna to add power to the hitting lineup."

Shackelford was one of the area's top hitters last season at Midview HS, batting .514 with, five doubles, four triples, 11 home runs and 35 RBI.

"Gabby is a player whose passion for the game is displayed through her work ethic," Norris said. "She is a hard worker that embraces critical situations in the game."

Tucker was a 2015 Scout Softball All American and plays for Maine South HS. She is from the same area as current CSU freshman Sydney Bajusz and the duo has played together.

"Mackenzie is a great player who initially caught my eye with her defensive abilities as an outfielder," Norris said. "We plan to utilize the power lefty with her speed and arm."

The Vikings open the 2018 season by hosting the CSU Dome Invitational from Feb. 9-11.
