Vikings Drop Twinbill to Detroit Mercy

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State recorded 16 hits over today's doubleheader against Detroit Mercy, but came out on the short end of both games to conclude a three-game series on Wednesday at Viking Field.

The Titans won the first game, 4-2, and the finale, 5-3.

In today's first game, Hanna Breeden went 4-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Vikings 11-hit attack. Melissa Jacobsen went 3-for-4 with two runs, while Mackenzie Joecken, Aubrie Tone, Bailee Gray and Kait Gairing all had one it.

CSU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Breeden's RBI single scored Joecken. However, Courtney Gilbert gave the Titans a 4-1 lead in the third with a grand slam. The Vikings sliced the deficit to 4-2 on Joecken's RBI single in the seventh and loaded the bases with two outs, but Gray's hard hit line drive was caught in rightcenter field to end the game.

The Titans took a 1-0 lead in game two with a tally in the third and added two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead.

CSU cut the Detroit Mercy lead to 4-2 in the sixth on an RBI single by Jacobesen and a sacrifice fly by Joecken. Gilbert's solo homer in the seventh extended the Titan lead to 5-2 before Gray's RBI fielder's choice in the seventh cut the lead to 5-3.

CSU once again had the tying run on base in the seventh, but couldn't push the runs across.

Tone finished the nightcap 2-for-3 with a run.

CSU returns to action on Friday and Saturday (April 28-29) with a three-game series at Youngstown State.
