Major Drives in Two in 6-4 Setback to Oakland

LIVONIA, Mich. - Alicia Major drove in two runs and Kristin Catalano worked three innings of scoreless relief, but Cleveland State dropped the series finale to Oakland, 6-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Madonna University.

Mackenzie Joecken and Riley Ries both finished 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, while Joecken scored two runs and Ries scored once. Major, Melissa Jacobsen, Bailee Gray and Kristin Catalano all had one hit.

Catalano was also strong in the circle over the final three innings, giving up just one hit with a strikeout.

The Golden Grizzlies scored the first run of the game in the second, but CSU responded with three runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead.

After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Mel Woodard drew a walk and Joecken followed with a single. Ries delivered an RBI single through the right side for CSU's first run of the afternoon and after Hanna Breeden drew a walk to load the bases, Major came through with a two-run single to centerfield to give the Vikings a 3-1 lead.

However, Oakland responded with four runs in the third and another tally in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead.

Joecken hit a solo home run in the fifth to slice the deficit to 6-4, and were able to put runners on second and third with two outs in the seventh, but could not get the tying runs in.

The Vikings are back in action this weekend when CSU hosts Wright State for a three-game Horizon League series at Viking Field.
