Vikings Drop First Two to Open Series vs. Oakland

LIVONIA, Mich. - Cleveland State opened a three-game series against Oakland on Tuesday afternoon, dropping both contests of a doubleheader. The games were played at Madonna University due to Oakland's field being unplayable because of weather.

Oakland won the first game today, 5-1, and won the nightcap in five innings, 14-1.

Oakland took a 1-0 lead in the opener with a run in the first inning, but Mackenzie Joecken's RBI double in the third scored Mel Woodard from first base to tie the game. It stayed that way until the sixth when the Golden Grizzlies played four runs to take a 5-1 lead.

Woodard finished 2-for-4 with a run, while Bailee Gray went 2-for-2 at the plate. Joecken and Hanna Breeden each had one hit.

Joecken started for the Vikings and worked 5 2/3 innings, giving up three runs - two earned - on five hits with seven strikeouts.

Breeden had an RBI single in the fourth inning of game two for the Vikings that scored Joecken.

Melissa Jacobsen, Joecken, Riley Ries, Breeden and Sofia Johantgen all had a hit in the nightcap.

The teams will conclude the three-game series with a 12:00 pm game on Wednesday (April 5) at Madonna University.
