Vikings Drop Two on Second Day of FGCU Tournament

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Cleveland State dropped a pair of games on the second day of the FGCU/Four Points Spring Break Classic on Saturday.

The Vikings lost to Drexel, 3-2, and fell in six innings to IUPUI, 9-1.

Drexel scored two runs in the first inning to take a quick lead, but the Vikings answered in the bottom half of the first on an RBI single by Riley Ries. Drexel added another run in the second to take a 3-1 lead, but Mackenzie Joecken's RBI single in the third cut the deficit to 3-2, but CSU could not plate the tying run.

Joecken threw a complete game for CSU, giving up three runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. She also finished 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.

Sofia Johantgen, Mel Woodard, Ries, Hanna Breeden and Kristin Catalano all had one hit.

In the nightcap vs. IUPUI, Joecken's RBI single scored Melissa Jacobsen in the first inning to give the Vikings an early lead. However, the Jaguars came back with a single run in the first and added four runs in the third to take a 5-1 lead.

IUPUI scored two more in the fourth and two more in the sixth to claim the win.

Joecken went 2-for-2 with an RBI at the plate as she had two of CSU's four hits. Jacobsen and Johantgen finished with one hit each vs. IUPUI.

CSU concludes play in the tournament with a 12:15 pm game against host FGCU on Sunday.
