Vikings Drop Two to Open ECU Pirate Clash

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Cleveland State softball team opened play at the ECU Pirate Clash on Saturday morning, falling to Bryant, 2-1, and St. Francis (Pa.), 6-0.

The Vikings are now 1-5 this year.

In the opener vs. Bryant, the Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the fifth as Melissa Jacobsen led off with a triple and scored on a one out sacrifice fly from Mel Woodard. However, Bryant responded with two runs in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead and held on for the win.

The Vikings did get Sofia Johantgen to third base in the seventh as she led off with a double and moved to third on a passed ball with two outs.

The Vikings outhit Bryant, 8-5, but stranded nine runners.

Johantgen and Hannah Breeden both went 2-for-3, while Marissa Marcelli, Jacobsen, Alicia Major and Bailee Gray all had one hit.

In game two, St. Francis (Pa.) used two runs in the first and third innings and single tallies in the second and fifth to claim the win as Ethel Santai limited CSU to one hit, a leadoff single from Jacobsen.

The Vikings conclude play in the ECU Pirate Clash on Sunday (Feb. 19) with two games. CSU will square off against St. Francis (Pa.) at 11:45 am and host East Carolina at 2:00 pm.

Both games will have live stats, while the ECU game will be streamed online for free.
