Vikings Fall to Bowling Green & Canisius to Open 2017 Season

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State softball team fell to Bowling Green and Canisius on Saturday morning at the CSU Dome Tournament to open the 2017 season.

The Vikings lost both games, 7-1.

In the season opener vs. Bowling Green, the Vikings jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo home run from Alicia Major. However, the Falcons answered with a run in the third to tie the game and took a 3-1 lead with two more runs in the fourth.

BGSU added three runs in the sixth and another tally in the seventh.

The Vikings were held to just two hits in the opener, Major's solo homer and a single by Mel WoodardMelissa Jacobsen also reached base with a walk.

Mackenzie Joecken started the opener and worked five innings, giving up three runs (two earned) with one strikeout.

In today's second game, Canisius jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a run in the second and three more in the fourth. The Golden Griffins extended the lead to 5-0 with a run in the sixth.

CSU scored in the bottom of the sixth as Jacobsen and Riley Ries reached on back-to-back one out singles and Woodard followed with a single to score pinch runner Hannah Tanis from second base.

Marissa Marcelli, Jacobsen, Ries, Woodard, Joecken and Aubrie Tone all had one hit in game two, while Marcelli also reached on a walk.

Kristin Catalano started game two and worked 5 2/3 innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and striking out one.

CSU concludes its opening weekend of the season with its final two games in the CSU Dome Tournament on Sunday (Feb. 12). The Vikings play Canisius at 8:00 am and Niagara at 10:30 am.
