Radjen Sparks CSU to Doubleheader Split

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Alex Radjen hit her first career home run and pitched four strong innings to earn the win as Cleveland State won game two from Detroit, 6-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Viking Field.

The Titans won the opener, 5-0.

CSU is now 22-25 overall and 7-10 in the Horizon League, while Detroit is 8-39 overall and 4-13 in the league.

After being shutout in the opener, the Vikings erupted for six runs in the second inning to jump on the Titans. Hannah Yoe had a one out single and Radjen, who entered the game with just 16 at-bats this season, followed with a home run to center field.

Alisha Silva followed with a double and moved to third on a single by Katelind Phillips. The duo moved up on a wild pitch with Silva scoring and after Nena Doran drew a walk, Cynthia Woodard clubbed her 23rd home run of the season, a three-run shot that allowed her to break the CSU single season record for RBI. She now has 49 this year, breaking the old mark of 47 set by Dara Toman in 2012.

The homers by Radjen and Woodard upped CSU's total to 67 this year, breaking the old single season record of 65 set in 2010.

The Titans sliced their deficit to 6-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth and Sam Henderson delivered a two-run single in the seventh to make it 6-4, but Mackenzie Joecken struck out Grace Schmeiser to end the game.

Radjen worked four innings, striking out three to improve to 8-7 this season, while Joecken earned her third save of the year by pitching the final three innings. She fanned six.

Woodard went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run in the nightcap, while Alyson Broschk and Hannah Yoe both finished 2-for-3.

In the opener, Detroit scored all five of its runs in the fourth inning and Christa McGahuey limited CSU to just two hits - singles by Susan Knight and Phillips - to pick up the win.

CSU closes the regular season with a three-game series at UIC this weekend with a single game on Friday at 4:00 pm EST and a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 pm EST.
