Vikings Travel to Youngstown State for Three Games

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State softball team continues Horizon League play with a three-game series at Youngstown State this weekend.

The teams open play with a doubleheader on Saturday (April 11) at 1:00 p.m. and will play the series finale on Sunday (April 12) at 1:00 p.m.

CSU enters the weekend with a 17-13 overall record and is in sixth place in the league with a 2-4 mark. The Penguins are 11-18 overall and tied for second place in the league with Green Bay at 4-4.

UIC, Oakland and Wright State are tied for first place in the league with 6-2 records.

The Vikings traveled to Green Bay for a three-game series last weekend, posting a 1-2 mark. After a 6-4 win in the series opener, CSU dropped the next two games. CSU also split a mid-week doubleheader at Morehead State last week.

Cynthia Woodard continued her torrid pace at the plate, going 8-for-18 (.556) with four runs, three doubles, two homers and five RBI in the five games last week.

Woodard is in the mix for the Triple Crown, leading the Horizon League in batting average (.458) and home runs (14) and is also tied for first in RBI with 31 with teammate Erica McNew. Woodard is also tops in the league in total bases (95), slugging percentage (.990) and runs scored (29).

McNew is not far behind Woodard, ranking second in the league in batting (.447) and home runs (9), while Nena Doran is hitting .398 with nine homers and 15 RBI.

Woodard's and McNew are tied for second all-time in CSU history with 33 home runs.

The trio has helped CSU become one of the top offensive teams in the Horizon League as the Vikings lead the league in batting average (.311), runs (158), total bases (418), slugging percentage (.537), RBI (144) and home runs (42).

The CSU pitching staff has been strong in the circle behind the duo of senior Alex Radjen and junior Susan Knight.

Knight is 8-5 with a 2.53 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 14 appearances, while Radjen has gone 6-4 with a 3.19 ERA and a league-best 75 strikeouts.

CSU is slated to play five games next week, starting with a doubleheader at Kent State on Tuesday (April 14) at 3:00 p.m. The Vikings will also host Valparaiso for a three-game league series next weekend, playing a single game on Friday (April 17) at 3:00 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday (April 18) at 1:00 p.m.
