Softball Splits Two at Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Cleveland State claimed a 6-4 win in today's first game at Green Bay, but dropped the nightcap, 12-4, in six innings, in a Horizon League doubleheader.

CSU is now 17-12 overall and 2-3 in the league, while the Phoenix is 10-14 overall and 3-2 in league play.

In the opener, Susan Knight worked 5.2 innings to earn the win and improve to 8-4 this season. Mackenzie Joecken recorded the final four outs to earn her second save.

Nena Doran, Cynthia Woodard and Erica McNew had two hits apiece, while McNew also drove in three runs. Woodard, Katelind Phillips and Joecken all drove in one run.

The Phoenix jumped on the board with a run in the first inning, but CSU came back with two runs in the third on a McNew double and Phillips single to take a 2-1 lead. Woodard added an RBI single in the fourth and McNew followed with a two-run single as the Vikings extended the lead to 5-1.

However, Green Bay came back with a run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth to close within 5-4. Joecken delivered an insurance run with an RBI double in the top of the seventh and struck out the side in the bottom half of the inning to close out the win.

The Phoenix scored two runs in the first inning of game two to take an early lead, but Joecken's RBI sacrifice fly got the Vikings on the board in the second inning. After Green Bay scored three runs in the third, CSU used back-to-back homers from Woodard and McNew and an RBI single by Joecken to slice the Phoenix lead to 6-4.

But CSU could get no closer the rest of the game as Green Bay scored two runs in the fifth and ended the game with four runs in the sixth, the final three coming on a home run by Katelyn Huemmer.

Woodard went 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI in the nightcap, while McNew and Alyson Broschk finished with two hits each.

The teams are slated to conclude the three-game series with a single game on Saturday (April 4) at 2:00 pm EST.
