Vikings Sweep Two at Southeastern Louisiana

HAMMOND, La. - The Cleveland State softball team swept a doubleheader at Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday evening, winning both games 7-2, including the nightcap in eight innings.

The two wins improve the Vikings to 11-5 this season.

In the opener, Susan Knight worked five innings, allowing just three hits and striking out two to improve to 5-2 this season. Knight also had two hits and two RBI to aid her cause.

Alex Radjen worked the final two innings and did not allow a hit.

Knight helped herself out in the second inning with a two-run single and the Vikings added four runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 6-0. After the Lions sliced the CSU lead to 6-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth inning, Erica McNew's solo homer in the sixth concluded the scoring.

It was McNew's sixth homer of the season.

McNew and Alyson Broschk joined Knight with two hits as CSU pounded out 10 hits in game one.

In the nightcap, Knight gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the third, but the Lions came back to take a 2-1 lead with two runs in the fourth.

It stayed that way until the seventh inning when Katelind Phillips delivered a one out double and pinch runner Darien Ward came in to score the tying run on Hannah Yoe's single and sent the game into extra innings.

CSU broke the game open in the eighth inning with five runs, including a three-run homer by Cynthia Woodard - her seventh of the season - and an RBI triple from Phillips.

Mackenzie Joecken retired three straight after a leadoff walk to earn the win (3-1) as she worked the final three innings, giving up just one hit. Radjen started and lasted five innings, giving up two runs on six hits and fanning two.

Nena Doran and Phillips had two hits each in the nightcap, while Woodard drove in three.

CSU is back in action on Thursday (March 11) when the Vikings play a single game at Southern Mississippi at 5:00 p.m.
