Vikings Split Two Games in Georgia

CANTON, Ga. - The Cleveland State softball team split two games on Sunday afternoon, falling to Saint Louis, 4-2, in the morning and earning a 10-2 win against Northern Kentucky in five innings.

CSU is now 10-5 this season.

In Sunday's opener, Saint Louis scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and two more in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead.

The Vikings used a two-run homer by Alyson Broschk in the seventh to slice the lead to 4-2, but after Katelind Phillips reached on an error, the next three Vikings were retired to end the game.

Five different Vikings had one hit each in the loss.

In the afternoon victory over Northern Kentucky, CSU's bats came alive as the Vikings pounded out 11 hits en route to a five inning win.

CSU wasted little time offensively, jumping on the board for four runs in the first inning, including a two-run single by Erica McNew.

Hannah Yoe led off the second inning with a home run to extend the lead to 5-0 and after the Norse scored two runs in the third inning, CSU put the game away with five runs in the fourth on two-run homers from Cynthia Woodard and Mackenzie Joecken.

Nena Doran finished 3-for-3 with two runs, while Woodard and Joecken had two hits apiece.

Joecken also picked up the win in the circle and improved to 2-1 this season. She pitched all five innings, allowing four hits and striking out five.

CSU's games against Austin Peay slated for Monday were cancelled due to pending weather. The Vikings will now return to action on Tuesday (March 10) when CSU plays a single game at Louisiana Tech at 1:00 p.m.
