CLEVELAND, Ohio - Freshman Mackenzie Joecken scattered three hits and struck out six in her collegiate debut as Cleveland State defeated Niagara, 8-0, in five innings in the second game of the CSU Dome Tournament.
The Vikings took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run double by Alisha Silva and added another run in the third inning on a Purple Eagle error to extend the lead to 3-0.
CSU scored five runs in the fifth inning to close out the win.
Cynthia Woodard led off the inning with a home run, the first of five straight hits to open the inning that included doubles from Erica McNew, Alyson Broschk and Joecken.
Nena Doran's two-out RBI single scored pinch runner Sydney Choe to end the game.
The Vikings pounded out 11 hits as Woodard finished 3-for-3 with a run and RBI. Broschk was 2-for-3, while Silva drove in two runs.
CSU closes play in the tournament with an 8:00 a.m. game against Canisius on Saturday (Feb. 7).
