Vikings Top Toledo, 4-3, in Season Opener

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Erica McNew and Nena Doran hit solo home runs and Alex Radjen struck out 10 as Cleveland State opened the 2015 season with a 4-3 win over Toledo in the CSU Dome.

CSU scored a pair of runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Doran led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a Hannah Yoe sacrifice and took third base on a Cynthia Woodard ground out to second base.

Doran scored on a wild pitch and McNew quickly made it 2-0 two pitches later with a home run to center field.

Toledo answered with a pair of unearned runs in the third inning, but CSU responded in the bottom half of the inning on a one out solo homer from Doran.

The Rockets tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the fifth, but pinch runner Kait Gairing scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a wild pitch with one out in the sixth inning.

Toledo managed nine hits off Radjen, but she fanned 10 batter, allowing just one earned run.

Doran went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs and an RBI, while Yoe, McNew and Radjen all had one hit.

The Vikings are back in action on Friday afternoon, taking on Niagara at 3:30 p.m. in the second game of the Dome Tournament.
