McNew, Woodard & Broschk Earn All-League Honors

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Cleveland State sophomore Erica McNew and junior Cynthia Woodard were named to the First Team All-Horizon League softball team, while sophomore Alyson Broschk was selected to the all-league second team.

The league office made the announcement on Wednesday morning prior to the start of the league championship.

McNew, last year's Horizon League Freshman of the Year, is making her second straight appearance on the all-league first team. The catcher ranks sixth in the league with a .355 average with 25 runs, eight doubles, six home runs and 16 RBI. Her 43 hits are 10th best in the league.

McNew, who hit .404 in league games with 13 runs, three homers and five RBI, helped aid the CSU pitching staff to a 2.87 ERA and seven shutouts from behind the plate. In her two seasons at CSU, McNew ranks third in school history with 24 home runs, two shy of second place.

Woodard, who was an all-league second team selection last season, ranks eighth in the league in batting (.349) and third in slugging (.643), doubles (11) and home runs (9). The shortstop had one of her biggest hits of the year when she hit a walk-off home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh in a 7-6 win over regular season league champion Green Bay on April 18.

Broschk is making her first-ever appearance on an all-league team after batting .316 with nine doubles, four home runs and a team-best 25 runs batted in. Earlier in the season, Broschk had a team-best 11 game hit streak and reached base safely in 14 straight contests. She is hitting .463 with runners in scoring position and .643 with a runner on third and less than two outs.

The Vikings (24-18, 8-8 HL) open the league tournament with a first round game against Youngstown State on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Wright State.
