Vikings Drop 1-0 Contest at Oakland

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. - Oakland used an unearned run in the fifth inning and it proved to be the difference in a 1-0 win over Cleveland State on Friday afternoon at the OU Softball Field.

The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader with the first game slated for 2:00 p.m. However, inclement weather pushed the start time back to 4:30 p.m. and only one game was played.

The Vikings fell to 21-15 overall and 5-5 in the league, while Oakland improved to 13-18 overall and 2-4 in the Horizon League.

Susan Knight was strong in the circle all afternoon, scattering seven hits and striking out three over six innings.

The Grizzlies broke through for a run in the fifth as they pieced together three singles and a CSU error to score a run.

CSU had a chance to tie the contest in the sixth as Cynthia Woodard and Erica McNew hit back-to-back singles. An Alyson Broschk groundout moved the runners up and Katelind Phillips put a ball in play to the first baseman, but Woodard was called out at the plate on a close play.

The Vikings pounded out eight hits in the game, including two each by Woodard and Hannah Yoe.

CSU is back in action with a three-game series at Detroit this weekend, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. The series concludes with a single game at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
