Broschk & Shields Earn Player of the Week Honors

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Cleveland State sophomore Alyson Broschk has been named the Horizon League Player of the Week, while senior Sara Shields was honored as the Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 14-20.

The league office made the announcement on Monday afternoon and honored the CSU duo after they led the Vikings to a 3-1 week.

It is the first honor for Broschk, while Shields is earning her second Pitcher of the Week award this year.

In four games last week, Broschk hit .545 (6-11) with four runs, two doubles, two home runs and seven RBI. In a 5-1 win over UIC on Monday afternoon, she was 3-for-3 with a homer and drove in four runs. Broschk had a .583 on-base percentage and a 1.273 slugging percentage in the four games. She is riding an 11-game hit streak and has reached base safely in 14 straight contests.

Shields had an impressive performance in the circle in CSU's 2-1 win over Green Bay in the series finale on Saturday afternoon. After being honored before the game on Senior Day, Shields fired a complete game, allowing just one run on six hits, while striking out 11 to improve to 6-1 this season.

A CSU pitcher has earned Horizon League Pitcher of the Week honors in five of the 11 weeks this year, including three of the last four. Shields was also honored on March 3 after throwing the 12th no-hitter in school history in a win over Quinnipiac.

The Vikings are scheduled to play seven games this week, beginning with a doubleheader against Kent State at Viking Field at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

CSU then heads to Oakland for a twinbill at 2:00 p.m. on Friday before traveling to Detroit for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday.
