Softball Splits Doubleheader With Green Bay; Wins On Walk-Off

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State split a doubleheader with Green Bay on Saturday at Viking Field, winning two of the three games from the Phoenix in the weekend Horizon League series.

CSU is now 21-14 overall and 5-4 in the league, while the Phoenix is 17-11 overall and 4-4 in the league.

The Phoenix won today's first game, 13-3, while CSU used a walk-off RBI single from Nena Doran to claim a 2-1 win in the finale.

In Friday's series opener, Cynthia Woodard drilled a leadoff homer in the bottom of the seventh give CSU a 7-6 win.

CSU scored an unearned run in the second inning of game two to take an early 1-0 lead. Katelind Phillips had a one out single and came all the way around to score when Susan Knight singled and the Green Bay rightfielder misplayed the ball.

The Phoenix tied the contest at 1-1 on Kelli Hutchinson's homer that hit the leftfield foul pole and it stayed that way until CSU's second walk-off win in as many days.

Knight led off the second with a walk and Darian Ward came in to pinch run. After a strikeout, Ward stole second, but could not advance to third on Janessa Rivera Keahi's groundout to third. Nena Doran followed with a ground ball to the right side that Hutchinson was able to stop, but Ward raced all the way home from second, beating the throw home for the game-winning run.

Sara Shields earned the win and improved to 6-1, firing a complete game. She gave up just one run on six hits, while striking out 11 after being honored between games on Senior Day.

Green Bay pounded out 13 hits in the opener to claim the victory in six innings.

CSU scored all three of its runs in the fourth inning as Woodard led off with a solo homer and Phillips had an RBI single.

McNew had two of CSU's seven hits in the opener. She also caught the first pitch before game two from her brother who returned home three days ago from Afghanistan.

The Vikings are slated to return to action on Tuesday (April 22) when CSU hosts Kent State for a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. at Viking Field.
