Knight Gem, Broschk Sac Fly Give CSU 2-1 Win

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Susan Knight pitched a complete game and Alyson Broschk hit a game-winning sacrifice fly with one out in the eighth inning to give Cleveland State a 2-1 win over Robert Morris on Sunday in the final game of the Winthrop Combat Invitational.

The Vikings, who went 3-2 at Winthrop this weekend, improved to 7-6 this season, while RMU fell to 12-6.

It was the third meeting in early season tournaments between the two teams with all three contests being close.

RMU won the first match-up, 1-0, on Feb. 9 at the CSU Dome Invitational and claimed a 3-1 win in eight innings over CSU on Feb. 22 at the Charlotte Invitational.

The Colonials took a 1-0 with a run in the top of the first, but CSU came right back to tie it at 1-1 on an RBI single by Erica McNew that scored Cynthia Woodard.

From there, Knight and RMU pitcher Geena Badolato took over.

Knight set RMU down in order in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, while Badolato walked three and gave up just one hit over the same span.

In the sixth, RMU used back-to-back one out singles and a wild pitch to put runners on second and third, but Knight got a fly ball to center field to end the inning.

With international tiebreaker rules in effect, the Colonials placed a runner on second base to start the eighth inning. She advanced to third on a wild pitch, but the Colonials were unable to get her in as Knight worked out of the jam.

Woodard started the eighth inning on second base and moved to third on a McNew groundout to the right side. That set the stage for Broschk who delivered a sacrifice fly to rightfield, scoring Woodard with the game-winning run.

Knight allowed just one run on six hits, while striking out four to improve to 3-4 this season.

Katelind Phillips, Woodard, McNew, Sara Shields and Hannah Yoe all had one hit, while Woodard scored both runs.

The Vikings are back in action on Thursday (March 6) when CSU plays two games against Maine in Clearwater, Fla., beginning at 12:00 p.m.

It begins a stretch of 11 games over nine days in Clearwater, Fla., for CSU over Spring Break.
