ROCK HILL, S.C. - Cynthia Woodard and Erica McNew each homered and Sara Shields pitched a complete game as Cleveland State defeated Wagner, 6-4, on Friday evening at the Winthrop Invitational.

CSU improved to 5-5 this year.

The Vikings jumped on the board in the first on back-to-back two-out doubles from Woodard and McNew. CSU erupted for four runs in the third to make it 5-0.

Katelind Phillips and Susan Knight opened with singles and Woodard followed with a three-run homer to give the Vikings a 4-0 lead. McNew followed with a solo blast to extend the lead to 5-0.

Wagner came back with a run in the fourth and used a three-run homer in the sixth to pull within 5-4, but McNew scored on a fielder's choice in the seventh to give CSU an insurance run and Shields worked around a two-out walk to preserve the win.

Woodard finished 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI, while McNew was 2-for-3 with two runs and drove in two.

Shields scattered six hits and struck out six to earn the victory.

The Vikings are back in action at the Winthrop Invitational on Saturday with two games. CSU faces Gardner-Webb at 11:00 a.m. and host Winthrop at 3:00 p.m.
