Toman And McNew Named To Spring Academic All-League Team

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Cleveland State softball duo of Dara Toman and Erica McNew each earned a spot on the Horizon League Softball Academic All-League Team Friday afternoon (June 14), as the Horizon League announced all eight of its Spring Academic All-League Teams. The honor is the first for both Toman and McNew.

Earlier this year, the duo led the Vikings to a fourth place regular season finish and a fourth place finish in the Horizon League Tournament - ending the year with a 22-27 overall record.

McNew, who led the Vikings in almost every major offensive category - batting average (.413), hits (59), home runs (18) & RBI (44), was named the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year and earned a spot on the All-League First Team. The Canton, Ohio native carries a 3.32 cumulative grade-point-average, majoring in exercise nutrition.

Toman finished an outstanding four-year career with the Vikings during 2013 - ending her time at CSU as the career record holder in home runs (60), RBI (154), runs scored (145) and total bases (453). For the season she posted a .373 batting average, 39 runs, 11 doubles, four triples, 15 home runs and 38 RBI, earning Horizon League Player of the Year honors and a spot on the All-League First Team. The Westerville, Ohio native has posted a 3.37 cumulative GPA throughout her college career, and will graduate this summer with a degree in communications.

The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour of 36 quarter-hour credits.
