CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Cleveland State softball team staged a comeback but couldn't fight all the way back, dropping the fifth and final game of the Under Armour Showcase to Wagner, 3-2 on Sunday (March 11).

The Vikings were 0-5 at the three-day event and are now 2-16 overall. Wagner improved to 1-9.

Cleveland State struck first with a run in the home half of the third inning. Alicia Nichols, who hit .364 (4-11) in the tournament, had a one-out single and starting pitcher Megan Bashak helped the cause with another base knock. After a double steal put both runners in scoring position, Andrea Nagy singled home Nichols to give CSU a 1-0 lead.

The lead didn't last for long after Wagner scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.

A CSU error put the first batter of the inning on base and she moved up on a sacrifice bunt. Following an infield pop out, Brittany Huss doubled to even the game at 1-1.

Huss moved up to third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Ashley Olsen to give the Seahawks their first lead of the day.

Wagner tacked on what proved to be an important insurance run in the top of the seventh when a runner on third base came in to score on a passed ball with two outs.

Trailing by a run in the seventh, Cynthia Woodard got things rolling with a one-out single. Sara Shields singled and an error by the right fielder allowed her to head to second and put Woodard on third. Nichols walked to load the bases with one out and the heart of the lineup coming to bat with the tying run in scoring position and the winning run standing on first base.

After Bashak lined out, Nagy singled to move everyone up one station and make it a one-run game. CSU had the winning run at second base, but a pop out to the second baseman ended the game.

Bashak took the loss to fall to 1-9. She allowed two runs in her 3.2 innings of work, but the run that ultimately put Wagner up for good was unearned. Shields worked in relief of Bashak and allowed just one hit in 3.1 innings with the only run allowed under her watch being of the unearned variety.

Olivia Zwick worked the final four innings in relief for Wagner and allowed just one run to earn the victory and improve to 1-2.

With the school on Spring Break, Cleveland State now heads to Kissimmee, Fla. for the Rebel Games. The Vikings will play eight games this week, beginning with two tomorrow against Bryant at 1:00 p.m. and Nebraska-Omaha at 3:00 p.m.
