Softball Signee Combs Named Michigan's 'Player of the Year'

Briana Combs, who signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball at Cleveland State beginning next season, was named the Gatorade `Player of the Year' in the state of Michigan on Monday (June 6).

The senior pitcher from Ladywood High School has the Blazers at 33-3 as they prepare for the Division II regional semifinals on Saturday (June 9). She is 33-1 with an eye-popping 0.09 ERA and 364 strikeouts in 225 innings pitched. She already has eight no-hitters and three perfect games to her name this season.

Opponents are hitting just .064 against her.

Combs has done damage of her own at the plate, hitting .536 with 17 doubles, 43 runs scored, 35 RBI and an .818 slugging percentage.

A 4.0 student who volunteers at local homeless shelters and food banks, Combs was honored with the award after meeting the criterion of athletic production, academic achievement and exemplary personal character.
