CLEVELAND, Ohio - Last week, 135 student-athletes from Cleveland State University were honored at the 2011-12 John Konstantinos Athletic Academic Honors Luncheon. Eight members of the 2012 Viking softball team were recognized for their efforts in the classroom while the team was the recipient of the Horizon League Community Service Award, presented annually to a team that exhibits outstanding support and care to our community at-large.

The team conducted over 525 hours of community service in the past year, ranging from raking leaves to helping out with the Salvation Army and the Cleveland Foodbank.

On March 31st, junior outfielder Caila Ferro read to a first grade class at St. Adalbert's School in Berea, Ohio.

"I think it's important for our team to get involved in the community and all the girls really do a nice job at the different sites," head coach Angie Nicholson said. "We try to stress that we're fortunate to have the resources that we have on our team and give back in some small way.

I have a great group of girls who really are good all-around people. They were more than deserving of the award and truly have made a difference in the community," Nicholson added.
