CLEARWATER, Fla. - Cleveland State got their offense going in the second game on Saturday (March 10) but it was too little too late after the Vikings surrendered eight runs to Canisius in the bottom of the first inning. CSU lost to Canisius 10-6 after falling to Central Michigan, 6-1, earlier in the day.

Cleveland State is now 2-15 overall.

After CSU went in order in the top of the first inning, 12 Golden Griffins batted in the bottom of the eight-run frame. Viking starting pitcher Brandy Holmes - making her 2012 debut - faced six batters and they all reached and scored before Kelsi Reed came in to relieve her.

Reed worked the next six frames and allowed four runs - all of them earned - on 10 hits. She walked three and struck out two.

After Reed ended the dismal first inning, the Viking offense came alive. They scored three runs in the top of the second - two of which came on a double by Nena Doran that plated Caila Ferro and Dara Toman

Hannah Yoe scored on a fielder's choice later in the inning to make it an 8-3 game.

CSU cut into the lead some more in the top of the third inning when a Doran single brought in Yoe and Cynthia Woodard to pull the Vikings within three.

The Vikings refused to go away and made it a two-run game with a run in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Megan Bashakworked a walk and Andrea Nagy singled. Toman followed with a single of her own to score Bashak and make it an 8-6 game.

Canisius tacked on two insurance runs in the fifth to increase the lead to four runs and the final margin of 10-6.

Jen Consaul, who worked 5.2 innings of relief, earned the win. She allowed three runs on eight hits. Holmes took the loss to fall to 0-1.

Nagy, Toman and Doran all had two hits in the second game.

In the first game, CMU took the lead when they manufactured a run off Bashak in the bottom of the first, bringing in Brittney Horan on a sacrifice fly by Molly Coldren.

CSU got the run right back in the top of the second when CMU's starting pitcher Kara Dornbos walked Andrea Nichols with the bases loaded to force in Woodard.

The Chippewas regained the lead in the third with a two-run inning and pushed three more runs across in the fifth.

Cleveland State was done in by five errors in the game - including three errors in the third inning that led to two runs. Bashak allowed six runs - four of which were earned - while falling to 1-8.

After the Chippewas staked themselves to a big lead, Dornbos retired the final eight Viking batters en route to her third complete game of the season, allowing just four hits while issuing three walks and striking out two.

The Under Armour Showcase concludes with a 9:00 a.m. game tomorrow against Wagner before the Vikings head to the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Fla.
