HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Freshman Grace Krosky scored two goals and junior Essence Canady also scored as Cleveland State defeated Northern Kentucky 3-0 in a Horizon League match on Saturday on the Northern Kentucky Soccer Field.
Krosky became the 21st player in Cleveland State history to score two goals in a match and joined fellow freshman McKenna Donahue to have achieved the feat this season.
Krosky scored a goal in each period and Canady added a goal in the second period to spark the Vikings to their third consecutive victory against Northern Kentucky.
Cleveland State, which improved to 4-6-3 overall and 2-2-1 in the Horizon League, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in a decisive first half. The Vikings owned a 5-1 advantage and took the lead for good working off of a set piece.
Working off a corner kick, Krosky gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead at the 38:07 mark of the opening period off a helper from Helena Novatsidis.
Cleveland State wasted little time in putting away the match in the second period.
Canady scored at the 49:43 mark of the period off an assist from Elena Gutlove to increase the Vikings lead to 2-0.
Just over two minutes later Krosky tallied her second goal of the match to push the lead to 3-0. Canady assisted on the goal, which came at the 52:22 mark of the match.
Keeper Stevie Holbrook turned in a clean sheet for the Vikings as she made four saves in her 90 minutes of action. It marked the fifth shutout of the season for Holbrook.
Northern Kentucky, which dropped to 5-7-0 overall and 2-3-0 in Horizon League play, outshot the Vikings 11-10 for the match but a majority of that total was accumulated after the Vikings built a 3-0 lead.
Cleveland returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 19) when it visits IUPUI for a Horizon League match beginning at 1 p.m.
