CLEVELAND -- Junior Elena Gutlove scored her team-leading third goal of the season, but Cleveland State fell to Milwaukee 5-1 on Saturday in a Horizon League match on Krenzler Field.
Gutlove tallied her goal in the 82nd minute to get the Vikings on the scoreboard. Milwaukee keeper Olivia Davies-McDaniel attempted to clear a ball in the box, but Gutlove intercepted the clearing attempt and found the back of the net.
Milwaukee, which improved to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in the Horizon League, took a 2-0 lead just 2:34 into the opening half. Gaby Schwartz converted a penalty kick off a Viking hand ball in the box at the 1:01 mark of the first and Taylor Hattori took a feed from Rafferty Kugler and scored from the angle at the 2:34 mark of the opening period.
The Panthers pushed the lead to 3-0 at the 31:42 mark of the first when Haley Steel scored an unassisted goal.
Hattori tallied her second goal of the match at the 53:25 mark of the second off assists from Haley Johnson and McKaela Schmelzer.
Gutlove then got the Vikings on the scoreboard in the 81st minute before Schmelzer capped the scoring with a goal at 83:35 of the second.
Cleveland State, which dropped to 3-5-2 overall and 1-1 in league play, got two shots each from Grace Grant, Gutlove and Bianca Sarti.
Cleveland State returns to action on Wednesday (Oct. 2) when it hosts Youngstown State at 7 p.m. on Krenzler Field.
