Week #12

THE OPENING KICK:
• Second-seeded Cleveland State will open play in the Horizon League Championship with a semifinal contest against No. 5 Detroit Mercy on Thursday, November 1 at 5:00 p.m. EST.
• The Vikings enter the tournament with a 10-6-1 overall record and earned the No. 2 seed after going 6-2-1 in the Horizon League.
• A win on Thursday would put the Vikings in the #HLWSOC Championship match, which is set for 7:00 p.m. EST on Saturday, November 3.

2018 #HLWSOC TOURNAMENT FIELD:
• Cleveland State is one of four teams still alive in the 2018 #HLWSOC Tournament Field, joining top-seeded Milwaukee, No. 5 Detroit Mercy and No. 6 Oakland. 
• Milwaukee, who is serving as the host for the championship, will face sixth-seeded Oakland in the second semifinal on Thursday.

CLEVELAND STATE AGAINST THE FIELD:
• During regular season play, the Vikings posted an 0-2-1 record against Milwaukee, Detroit Mercy and Oakland.
• Against the Titans, Cleveland State stands at 4-10-2 all-time, while the Vikings are 2-3-2 against the Grizzlies and 0-18-1 against the Panthers.

CLEVELAND STATE IN THE #HLWSOC TOURNAMENT:
• The Vikings will be making their 11th appearance in the Horizon League Tournament and just their second since the 2015 season.
• Cleveland State is 1-8-2 all-time in the #HLWSOC Tournament, with the lone win coming as a 2-1 decision against Youngstown State in a First Round  contest during the 2007 season.
• Thursday will mark the first time that the Vikings are playing in the Semifinals, and a victory would put Cleveland State into the Championship match for the first time in program history.

THE REGULAR SEASON:
• Cleveland State posted a 6-2-1 record during regular season Horizon League matches this season, with the six wins marking a program record.
• The Vikings finished in second place in the league standings - the highest regular season finish in program history.

ALL-LEAGUE HONORS:
• Earlier this week, Cleveland State landed five players on the All-League teams, marking a program record with the five total honorees.
• For the first time in program history the Vikings picked up three First Team honors, with Sarah Krause, Dani Sowinski and McKenna Vento earning the accolade.
Ashley Thiss was named Second Team All-League, while Ja'Maya Ward was named to the All-Freshman Team.

THE HEAD COACH:
• Dallas Boyer is in his second season as the head coach at Cleveland State, owning an 18-14-2 overall record.
• Prior to becoming the head coach, Boyer was an assistant for the Vikings from 2007-16.

VIKINGS EARN UNITED SOCCER COACHES ACADEMIC HONOR:
• Earlier this season Cleveland State was named a United Soccer Coaches All-Academic Team, earning the honor for the 10th straight year. During the 2017-18 academic year, Cleveland State posted a 3.62 team GPA and had 24 student-athletes named to the Cleveland State Dean's List.

VENTO & MORRIS NAMED #HLWSOC ALL-ACADEMIC:
• Individually, seniors Stacie Morris and McKenna Vento were honored with Horizon League All-Academic honors last week, Morris carrying a 3.96 GPA studying exercise science, and Vento owning a 3.87 GPA while pursuing a degree in health science.

IN THE CSU RECORD BOOK:
• With an overall record of 10-6-1, the Vikings have tied the program record for wins in a season which was set during the 2011 campaign.
• As a team, the Vikings have recorded 28 total goals so far this season, which ties the program record for single-season goals, and marks just the fourth time in program history that the Vikings have tallied 25+ goals in a season.
• Earlier this season the Vikings posted a six-match unbeaten streak (5-0-1), which tied the longest unbeaten streak in program history (also went 5-0-1 during 2013).

IN THE CSU RECORD BOOK…INDIVIDUALLY:
• So far this season, senior Dani Sowinski has tallied nine assists, marking a single-season record for the Vikings. Sowinski, who is at the top of the record book for single-season helpers, also ranks second in the Career Record Book with 14 assists.
• Among league players, Sowinski ranks second with her nine assists this season.
McKenna Vento's six goals this season is tied for fifth in the Single-Season Record Book, while she is also tied for fifth in the Career Record Book with 12 total goals.
• Among league players, Vento is tied for first with her six goals this year.
• Playing in her first season as a Viking, senior Sarah Krause has recorded a team-best 16 total points on five goals and six assists this year, ranking fourth in the CSU Single-Season Record Book. 
• Entering tournament play, Krause is tied for fourth with her 16 total points.

FREE KICKS:
• For her offensive performance against IUPUI in the league opener, McKenna Vento was named the Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week. This marked the first weekly honor for Vento.
• Sophomore Stevie Holbrook was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week for the season's opening week after combining for four saves as the Vikings earned victories over Howard (2-1 OT) and Chicago State (3-1).
• Cleveland State had three Vikings named to the UNCW Soccer Invitational All-Tournament Team - Stevie Holbrook, Essence Canady, Sarah Krause.
