Women’s Soccer Cruises To 5-0 Victory Against Green Bay

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's soccer team remained undefeated in Horizon League play Saturday afternoon, picking up a 5-0 shutout against Green Bay. The Vikings improve to 8-4-1 overall this season and 4-0-1 in league action.

The Vikings, who earned their fifth shutout of the season and third straight, are improving on their best league start in program history, standing as one of three undefeated teams left in league play.

The Vikings got on the board early in the first half, as Sarah Krause posted her fourth goal of the season to give Cleveland State the 1-0 edge. Krause was able to put the ball in the back of the net from just a few yards out following a rebound pass from Ja'Maya Ward.

Cleveland State was then able to gain a 2-0 advantage later in the first frame, as the Vikings benefited from a Green Bay own goal in the 29th minute.

Just 10 minutes into the second half the Vikings added an insurance goal, as Briana Niedermeier recorded her first goal of the season off of a free kick. Cleveland State was awarded the free kick just outside the box after a yellow card was issued to Green Bay, and Niedermeier was able to capitalize on the opportunity to give the Vikings the 3-0 lead.

The Viking offense wasn't done yet though, as Ward tallied her fourth goal of the year in the 62nd minute to give Cleveland State a 4-0 lead, and then Essence Canady put the Vikings up 5-0 with her third goal of the season in the 66th minute.

Cleveland State's offensive explosion marked the second time over the last two seasons that the Vikings have tallied five goals in a single match, and the seventh time in program history.

The Vikings were able to control play throughout the majority of the contest, owning a 15-3 edge in shots and a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Stevie Holbrook picked up the win in goal for the Vikings, recording three saves on the day.

Up next for the Vikings will be a 7:00 p.m. contest against Northern Kentucky on Saturday, October 13.
