Ward Scores In 1-1 Tie At Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Cleveland State women's soccer team remained undefeated in Horizon League play Saturday evening, as the Vikings played to a 1-1 double overtime tie at Oakland.

The Vikings, who were playing in their second overtime contest of the season, are now 5-4-1 overall and 1-0-1 in #HLWSOC action.

After giving up a first half goal to the Golden Grizzlies, Cleveland State had to play from behind for the second part of the first half and the start of the second frame, until Ja'Maya Ward was able to find the back of the net in the 71st minute.

Ward, who now has three goals on the season, evened the match at 1-1 when she was able to put the Vikings on the board following an assist from Sarah Krause, her fourth helper of the year.

The two teams then played a scoreless 20 minutes over the last part of the regulation, forcing the match into overtime.

Cleveland State had some good looks at the game-winner early on in the first overtime period, earning a pair of cornerkicks that led to three shots, including one on goal from Ashley Thiss.

During both overtime periods, Cleveland State held a 5-1 advantage in shots, but the Vikings weren't able to convert, coming away with the 1-1 tie.

For the contest, Cleveland State held a 12-7 advantage in shots over Oakland, and recorded nine cornerkicks to Oakland's one.

Stevie Holbrook played the entire contest in goal for the Vikings, finishing with three saves to give her 39 for the season.

Ward led the Viking offense with four total shots, including two on goal.

The Vikings will continue #HLWSOC play with two matches next week, traveling to Youngstown State for a 7:00 p.m. contest on Wednesday, September 26 and hosting UIC at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 29.
