Vikings Fall To UNCW In Weekend Finale

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Cleveland State women's soccer team closed out action at the Courtyard by Marriott UNCW Soccer Invitational Sunday, falling to the host Seahawks, 3-0 in a hot and sunny Sunday afternoon contest.

The Vikings finished the weekend with a 1-1 record after picking up a 4-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson in their first contest of the tournament on Friday.

Courtyard by Marriott UNCW Soccer Invitational All-Tournament Team honorees: Essence Canady, Stevie Holbrook, Sarah Krause.

During the first 45 minutes of action, UNCW controlled play throughout the majority of the frame, taking a 1-0 lead into the halftime break after a Seahawk goal in the 30th minute.

The Vikings had just one shot during the first half, with Grace Grant getting a shot on goal in the 40th minute and making the UNCW goalkeeper work to keep the Vikings off the board.

Stevie Holbrook recorded six saves during the first 45 minutes, including two during the final two minutes of the frame when a strong Cleveland State defensive effort kept the score at 1-0 UNCW.

The Vikings started the second half with some offensive pressure then, as they had a few good looks on goal during the opening minutes, including a header from Jenna Prathapa that went just wide of the goal.

Despite Cleveland State doing a better job of controlling the momentum during the second half, UNCW was able to add to its lead in the 68th minute, when the Seahawks gained a 2-0 advantage and then extended its lead to 3-0 – what would turn out to be the final score – just 10 minutes later.

For the contest, Holbrook finished with 10 saves, bettering her career-high which she set against Fairleigh Dickinson earlier this weekend.

The Vikings managed just two shots on the day, compared to 21 from UNCW, while the Seahawks also held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Next weekend the Vikings will close out non-league play, hosting Ohio at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 7 and traveling to Canisius for a 1:00 p.m. match on Sunday, September 9.
