Vikings Rally for 3-2 Win in Overtime vs. Detroit Mercy

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State scored three unanswered goals, including the game-winner from Aliani Lorenzo just 2:28 into overtime as the Vikings earned a 3-2 win over Detroit Mercy on Saturday night at Krenzler Field.

THE GOALS

  • Detroit Mercy took a 1-0 lead just eight minutes into the match with a goal and extended the lead to 2-0 at the 57:11 mark.
  • However, the Vikings got on the board at the 68:37 mark when McKenna Vento scored her fourth goal of the season. Grace Grant sent a ball up and across the field that Vento tracked down in the box, beating a Titan defender and goalkeeper to the ball and slotting a shot toward the far post.
  • CSU evened the match at 2-2 less than three minutes later when the Titan goalkeeper committed a penalty, giving CSU an indirect free kick just outside of the box.
  • Vento tapped the ball into play and Grant blasted a shot around the Titan wall for her fourth goal of the year.
  • CSU kept the pressure on late in regulation, forcing the Titan goalkeeper into several outstanding saves.
  • Lorenzo would go on to score the game-winning goal just 2:28 into overtime.
  • Vento sent a ball up field that Dani Sowinski one touched to Lorenzo who fired a shot from just outside the box to the upper left corner for her third goal of the season.

KEY STATS

  • CSU's three goals raised its Horizon League total to 15 for the year, most for a season in program history. The old mark was eight set last year.
  • Vento increased her career assist total to nine, moving into a tie for fourth on the all-time list in program history.
  • Vento increased her season point total to 12, while Grant's goal and assist moved her season point total to 10. The duo joins Jenna Prathapa (15) and Dani Sowinski (12) with double digit points this year. It's the first time in program history that more than two different players have reached double digit points.
  • The Vikings have 26 goals this year, just two shy of tying the 2014 squad for most in a season.
  • CSU's four wins in Horizon League play are the second most in a season in school history, one shy of tying the 2010 team who won five League matches.

  • The Vikings play two road matches next week, beginning with a 7:00 pm match at Wright State on Wednesday (Oct. 18). CSU will also play at Northern Kentucky on Saturady (Oct. 21) at 7:00 pm.
