Vikings Fall to Oakland, 1-0

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Oakland on Saturday night at Krenzler Field in the regular season home finale.

The Vikings fell to 8-8-1 overall and 4-4 in the Horizon League, while the Golden Grizzlies improved to 6-5-6 overall and 5-1-2 in league play.

Appearing at home for the final time in the regular season, the Vikings honored their seven seniors - Chloe Fadenholz, Vickie Havas, Jen Jankowski, Erin O'Toole, Samantha Sarmento, Allie Sieradzki and Sarah Wood in a pre-match ceremony.

The teams battled through a steady rain for the first 70 minutes of the match before it let up. By the time it had let up, Oakland had a 1-0 lead as Brianne Horne scored her second goal of the season at the 52:45 mark.

Horne took a corner kick from Joan Sieja from just inside the box on the left side and sent a shot toward the goal that was deflected in by the Vikings.

It proved to be the game-winner as the Vikings could not muster the tying goal, despite several chances. No chance was better than Sieradzki's strike from about 30 yards that was saved by Oakland's Emily Zweng as she leaped to her left and punched the ball away with one hand.

Oakland held an 11-9 advantage in shots as Zweng made four saves, while Jamie Daniels posted six saves for CSU.

The Vikings close out the regular season next Friday (Oct. 30) with an 8:00 pm EST match at Valparaiso.
