Wood Saves PK, But Vikings Fall to Oakland, 1-0

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Sarah Wood made a save on a penalty kick in the fist half, but an early second half goal by Oakland was the difference in a 1-0 Grizzly win over Cleveland State on Saturday night at Krenzler Field.

The loss dropped the Vikings to 8-8-1 overall and 2-4 in the Horizon League, while Oakland improved to 9-7-1 overall and 4-2 in league play.

Wood was strong all match long, finishing with 10 saves to increase her season total to 114, third most in a season in program history. The total included a diving save to her left on a penalty kick in the first half and another save on a follow up shot. Less than a minute later, she thrawted an Oakland breakaway attempt in the box.

Wood made seven first half saves, but the Grizzlies were able to tally the lone goal of the match at the 55:54 mark when Abigail Haelewyn took a feed from Meghan Reynolds and beat the CSU keeper to the far post.

The Vikings best chance to tie the match at 1-1 came in the 73rd minute, but a shot by Brittney Koester sailed just high.

Oakland outshot CSU, 17-3 and had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Vikings close the regular season with a 7:00 p.m. match at Wright State next Saturday (Nov. 2).
