CSU Wins at Akron, 2-1

AKRON, Ohio - Cleveland State ran its unbeaten streak to five straight matches with a 2-1 victory at Akron on Sunday afternoon.

The Vikings, who improved to 6-4-1 overall, are now 4-0-1 in their last five games and went 2-0-1 in their three matches over a five day span this week, giving up just two goals in 290 minutes of action this week.

Akron slipped to 3-3-2 this year.

"Today was a very scrappy win for us," head coach Derrek Falor said. "Looking at the big picture, we didn't do ourselves a lot of favors with our attack, but took advantage of counter attacking and getting good scoring chances. And I think we are figuring things out on the defensive end.

"It's a good feeling to be undefeated (4-0-1) over the last five matches and have some momentum going into league play."

CSU was held to one shot in the first half, but the Vikings made it count as Vickie Havas took advantage of a breakaway, scoring from the top of the box at the 29:31 mark.

It was Havas' third goal this week and team-leading fifth of the season. It also raised her point total to a team-best 13 on the year.

It stayed that way until eight minutes remained when Amanda Sivic scored to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.

Sivic received a ball through the backline and unleashed a shot from about 30 yards out that found the upper corner of the goal.

It was her third goal of the season.

Akron was able to get on the board at the 83:10 mark on a goal from the top of the box by Kelly Deniro, but the Zips would not get the tying goal.

Sarah Wood was strong once again in the net, making nine saves, while Akron's Klaie Adee made one save.

The Vikings are now out of action until Saturday (Sept. 28) when CSU hosts Detroit at 4:00 p.m. at Krenzler Field.
