Vikings Post 1-0 Victory In Final Exhibition Contest

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Behind an Erin O'Toole goal in the opening period, the Cleveland State women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 victory over Niagara in their final exhibition contest of the season. The two teams played three 30-minute periods, instead of two 45-minute halves.

Cleveland State's game-winner came just 14 minutes in, as O'Toole put a header into the top right corner of the net off of a Sarah Kaiser corner kick.  The Vikings were able to control the tempo throughout the final 15 minutes of the first period and carried that momentum throughout the second 30-minute period.

The Vikings had an opportunity to extend their lead 20 minutes in to the second period, as they were awarded a penalty kick after a foul was called in the box. The Niagara goalie was able to save the penalty kick attempt, but Vickie Havas rebounded her own shot and immediately put a second shot on goal with the same result.

Niagara was also able to get a good look at the goal during the second period, as they put a shot on goal that Sarah Wood was able to save, before a CSU defender was able to save a second Niagara shot on goal.

The CSU defense held strong throughout the final 30-minute period, not allowing Niagara to get any shots off during the last frame.

Cleveland State will begin the regular season next Friday (August 23), when they host Canisius at 7:00 p.m. The Vikings will also host Bowling Green that Sunday (August 25) at 1:00 p.m.
